As the diagnosis and awareness of ADHD increases - more of your student are likely to discover they have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder), AuDHD when some has both autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) and Autism later in life.
In 2023 ADHD was the second most viewed page on the NHS website and wait lists for assessment vary from 12 week to more than 550 weeks (Over ten years!)
ADHD UK estimates 2.6 million people in the UK have the condition and the majority of these people remain undiagnosed.
Even with the significant rise in assessment and diagnosis there is still no real clear figures for formal diagnosis.

Recent years have seen a significant increase in ADHD diagnoses, particularly among adults and women. Research suggests that females are diagnosed, on average, four years later than males due to differences in symptom presentation. This has led to a surge in demand for assessments and support services.

In response, the UK government and NHS England have introduced measures to improve ADHD care:
  • Creation of an ADHD Taskforce – In 2024, NHS England launched a task-force to address challenges such as long waiting times and inconsistent service quality across regions.
  • Review of Diagnostic Practices – The NHS is evaluating ADHD diagnostic processes to ensure accuracy, particularly in response to concerns about private assessments and over-diagnosis.
  • Efforts to Reduce Service Backlogs – Strategies such as partnerships with private providers and improved data collection are being explored to cut long waiting times for assessments and support.
These initiatives reflect a growing awareness of the importance of timely diagnosis and accessible support for individuals with ADHD.

Creating adhd inclusive classes

Support for Yoga Teachers!

ADHD affects focus, impulse control, and energy levels, making traditional yoga classes challenging for some individuals. By understanding ADHD-friendly approaches, you can foster a more supportive and empowering environment that allows neurodivergent students to thrive.

Why ADHD-Inclusive Yoga Matters

Flexible Class Structure
  • Offer shorter sessions or movement-based warm-ups to help with engagement.
  • Provide clear structure but allow for gentle transitions between activities.
Multi-sensory Cues
  • Use verbal, visual, and tactile cues to enhance understanding.
  • Demonstrate movements more than once and encourage students to explore at their own pace.
Encourage Movement & Fidgeting
  • Let students know that movement is welcome – they don’t have to be still to be engaged.
  • Use dynamic poses and incorporate mindful movement rather than long static holds.
Reduce Overwhelm
  • Keep instructions concise and to the point.
  • Offer options to modify poses rather than rigid expectations.
Create a Safe & Supportive Space
  • Keep lighting and sound levels comfortable.
  • Allow students to take breaks and self-regulate without judgment.

Encourage Self-Compassion
  • Remind students that their yoga practice is personal, and there is no ‘right’ way to experience it.
  • Incorporate breath-work and grounding techniques that are accessible and easy to integrate into daily life.

There are lots of reasons Why you can’t find the time for yourself and it is much harder to find the space to practice at home. But if you make that commitment, you will do it, and you will feel all the better for making the time for yourself.
